If you’ve been thinking about picking up a Nikon D700, now is probably the time to do it. The D700 has dropped in price in one reputable Australian store to under $2350. Yes, that’s right. A D700 with an Australian manufacturers warranty for $2350.
Some people will be asking whether or not it would be worth waiting for the D700’s replacement. In short, it’s impossible to say since no specs have been released. However, here are a couple of things if this question is on your mind.
Is a 12MP FX sensor that has the capabilility to shoot at 8 frames per second and ISO 6400 enough for your needs?
Do you actually need video? Could you use a handycam?
Are you prepared to spend over $3500 on a new camera body?
These are the basic questions I have been asking customers who’ve been unsure about whether or not to buy the D700. Interestingly, when people actually think about it, quite often the answer is the D700 will perform the functions they require.
This is not always true though of course. Some people would actually like a little more resolution, and some people need more than 12MP’s. The reality with the number of megapixels is that most people don’t actually need more than 12MP.
The ISO is another feature than really should be ok. Rather than having 512,000 ISO, the manufacturers should be simply trying to improve the current ISO’s image quality, such as detail, dynamic range and colour.
The D700 replacement is expected to be announced in April. If it’s called the D700s, then is means it has the new D3s sensor with full HD video. If it’s the D700x, then it will have the D3x sensor with full HD video.
If however, it’s called the D800 or D900, or even something else, then it’s likely to be a completely new sensor.
So, back to the original topic. If you’re thinking about picking up a D700, then NOW is the time o do it. I’m not sure I could be more clear and obvious on this is I said it any other way. If you want one, drop me a line and I’ll be able to fix you up.
